San Diego, California

Sitting in the southwest corner of the state, San Diego is where California began, originally claimed in the name of Spain by Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. With an average annual temperature of just over 70 degrees, everyday is a good day for a trip to the beach or a farmer’s market. The beaches are everywhere and you are likely to find a market somewhere just about any day of the week—and year-round, no less. The city’s restaurants offer everything from casual takeout to four-star dining, with the fish taco as the local favorite. You haven’t truly experienced eating in San Diego if you haven’t enjoyed one of their deep fried, battered fish wrapped in a corn tortilla with cabbage and sauce.

Fragrant Chicken Curry

Really good recipe. I was feeding two young kids too, so I deleted the cayenne pepper. This made a very, very mild curry for those who dont care for *hot*. I gave my dish a couple of shakes of tobasco, that kicked it up a bit.

Szechwan Shrimp

Reviewed on Oct. 5, 2008 by meg
Wow this was so good! Made the house smell like a chinese restaurant. I doubled the sauce, used fresh chopped ginger instead of ground, added half a red pepper cut into strips, and served over rice. I used raw, frozen shrimp which I thawed and sautéed before starting the garlic and onions. Will make this again!

Tomato Broccoli Bake

Reviewed on Oct. 5, 2008 by meg
This was just ok. It's a good basic recipe, but I think it needs some adjustments. I would chop the onions instead of slice, add more cheese and garlic, and only bake it for 10-15 minutes. The broccoli came out overdone and the pasta was a tad dry. I might add milk next time to make it more creamy. It doesn't really need to cook in the oven since all the ingredients are cooked beforehand and dumped into the dish. It just needs to be warmed enough to melt the cheese, but not overcook the veggies. Also, bread crumbs sprinkled on top would be good.
